The Basement > The Library
An Overview of The Library
The front room of the basement was the main kitchen of the house during Dickens's period of residence. Doubtless it was put to good use. Dickens loved entertaining, and his wife published a book of menus, What Shall We Have for Dinner, with an appendix of recipes. The room is now used to house part of the Museum's library: namely its vast collection of editions of Dickens's works. If you cannot visit the Museum's collection in person, we recommend you visit the World Wide School's collection of Dickens's Literature.
In addition to the collection of books, this room is also home to a sketch of David Copperfield and Mr. Micawber from David Copperfield, two leg posts from the White Hart Inn in Southwark, and a large table where special handling sessions are held.
