The Still Room The Still Room The Still Room

The Still Room was originally used for distilling perfumes and cordials. By the 1830s it was in use for the room in a middle-class home where cakes, preserves and liqueurs were kept, where bread and butter, tea and coffee were prepared. It was also evidently the room from which the housekeeping was directed. Possibly fitted in the late 1830s at Dickens's orders, the handsome fireplace suggests the mistress of the household spent time here. The room is now used to show a DVD about Dickens's life and works for visitors to the Museum. In addition to the DVD, the room features a desk at which Dickens used to work.
