Stairways
The stairway leading to the second floor has many items featured. Periodically along the wall are sketches of characters and scenes from several of Dickens's works, especially from Martin Chuzzlewit and Dombey and Son. The most prominent item is a massive golden arm with a hammer in its hand. This is the golden arm referred to in A Tale of Two Cities, and was taken from a shop in Soho. Another prominent feature is a wooden statue of a midshipman, which was referred to in Dombey and Son. A drawing of a scene from Dombey and Son featuring the midshipman can also be found in the stairway. A large painting showing Mr. Pickwick addressing a group of men is above the wooden statue. In one of the windows is a suncatcher of Paul and Florence Dombey. Lastly, there is a display case featuring small figures of characters as well as a plate with Dickens's image displayed.
