Little Wooden Midshipman
This is the original "Little Wooden Midshipman" Immortalized by Charles Dickens in Dombey and Son. On permanent loan from Messrs. Imray, Laurie, Norie, and Wilson Ltd., Chart Publishers whose trade sign it has been for 200 years. Dickens saw it at their premises in Leadenhall Street which he describes as those of Sol Gills. The firm later moved to Minories taking the figure with it. The Midshipman was evacuated when war broke out in 1939 and came to the Museum in 1946.
