Sikes and Nancy

Dickens's electrifying adaptation of Nancy's cruel murder from Oliver Twist was the great finale to his hugely successful career as a performer of his own works.

His acting, both brutal and unflinching, caused many of his Victorian audiences to feel faint with shock. Yet most were unanimous in their praise:

"Never ... through the force of mere reading was a vast concourse of people held so completely within the grasp of one man." The Times

These performances however took a fatal toll on Dickens himself. His health already failing, it was believed by many of his friends and family, that this 'Murder' reading eventually killed it's author, who died not long after finishing a gruelling tour of this work.

Dominic Gerrard (RSC/West End) returns to the Charles Dickens Museum to recreate this famous performance!

Dominic's performance of A Christmas Carol has been described as "an exceptionally effective and powerful interpretation of the Christmas story" (The Stage ****) and "a worthy rival to Simon Callow's one man Carol" (Independent on Sunday).
