Explore the world of Victorian paper crafts and discover how people created artwork to protect and decorate their books. In this fun and creative workshop you will craft your own hand-bound notebook and a beautiful marbled paper book jacket!

Become a Victorian animator

Ever wondered what Victorian children did before television and cinema? Come and explore the early stages of Victorian cinema, by making your very own zoetrope. Families will have the opportunity to bring Dickens’s stories to life through simple but effective animation. Step back in time and watch the story spin and unfold before your eyes.

11th August

Mrs Dickens’s Kitchen

Come and try your hand at making your own butter using authentic Victorian methods.

Made according Catherine Dickens’s Maitre d’Hotel recipe, you will even have a chance to taste your delicious lemon and parsley butter when you have finished churning!

18th August

Build The Smallest Theatre in the World!

Charles Dickens prided himself on owning the ‘The Smallest Theatre in the World’ at another of his London homes, Tavistock House. This enormously entraining workshop allows you to take home your very own miniature theatre. Bring Dickens’s characters to life upon the stage, with velvet curtains, actors, props and even a marquee – all inside a matchbox!

25th August

Victorian Puppetry

Bring a character to life with this Victorian puppet making workshop. Create a moving, dancing, jumping puppet of your own and act out all your favourite Dickens scenes! Using traditional techniques this captivating workshop is entertaining for all ages.

11am – 3pm drop in sessions

Activities run as drop in sessions (unless otherwise stated) and are FREE for families with general admission.
