A Final Story

In 1867, after five years as Charles’s employee, Wilkie departed All The Year Round after one final joint story – ‘Tom Tiddler’s Ground’. Charles took his resignation amicably, writing ‘I am very sorry that we part company (though only in a literary sense).’
