A Horse Called Duke

A horse called Duke

This wooden name plate belonged to one of Dickens’s horses, Duke. It would have adorned Duke’s stable and is in a horseshoe shape. We do not know when Dickens owned Duke but it is likely that it was before he moved to his last home, Gad’s Hill Place. At Gad’s Hill we know that Dickens named his horses after characters from his books.
