A scene of domesticity

This letter is from Dickens to George Cruikshank, who completed the illustrations for one of Dickens’s earliest novels, ‘Oliver Twist’. In this note, Dickens describes a scene of cosy domesticity, outlining that the image should include ‘a small black teapot on the table with a little tray & so forth’ and ‘the cat & kittens before the fire’, which the author outlines as an essential homely feature.
