Pets in verse

Dickens’s oldest daughter Mamie lived with him at Gad’s Hill Place and had her own pets, Williamina the cat and Mrs Bouncer the dog. Mrs Bouncer was admired for ‘her grace and daintiness’ and soon became a favourite member of the household. So much so, that this comic poem was written about her by Dickens’s friend, the author, Percy Fitzgerald.
