Enter the world of Dickens’s London and enjoy one of his most iconic stories as many of his contemporaries would have encountered it!

Join us for a unique toy theatre production of Oliver Twist in the smallest theatre in the world (on an even smaller stage), presented by David Powell, Judy Tcherniak and Alan Powers from Pollock’s Toy Museum! The performance also includes a brief introduction to the history of English toy theatre.

Charles Dickens enjoyed great success from the publication of his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, but it was Oliver Twist which catapulted him to international superstardom. His words didn’t stay in the realm of print either and before Oliver Twist was even completed, the first theatre adaptation made its debut in 1838. By 1850, Dickens had been dramatised in 240 different productions, securing his place on the world stage.

One such production was a special toy theatre version of Oliver Twist by John Redington of Hoxton Street. Starring cardboard actors and paper scenery, which were worked invisibly from behind and presented in the parlour to an audience of family and friends, it follows the Regency and Victorian craze among boys for ‘Juvenile Drama’.

Pollock’s Toy Museum was founded by Marguerite Fawdry in 1956 at 44 Monmouth Street, Seven Dials, an area well known to Dickens. It is currently based at 49 Whitgift Centre, Croydon, with a smaller pop-up in the City of London at 32 Leadenhall Market.
