Out for a drive

Dickens is about to go out for a drive in this image, accompanied by his daughters and Georgina Hogarth. At the head of the horse is Dickens’s smartly dressed groom, James Marsh, who holds the horse’s bridle for the photo. The horse, Newman Noggs, was named after a character from ‘Nicholas Nickleby’. Curled up by the front wheel is one of the family’s dogs.
