By the time that Charles and his wife, Catherine, had moved to Doughty Street, Charles was becoming a very well-known writer, thanks to the success of his first full-length novel, The Pickwick Papers. Charles and Catherine were keen to show off their lovely new home to a growing number of famous friends. Regular guests included Daniel Maclise, a successful painter, William Macready, a famous actor-manager, and Charles’ best friend, writer and critic, John Forster.
